Embracing Change: Taking the Next Step

Life is a journey filled with countless opportunities for growth and progression, and, of course, the occasional plot twist. Whether we're navigating our careers, nurturing relationships, or embarking on personal development quests, taking the next step is essential to keep moving forward. But let's be real, fear, uncertainty, and the cozy allure of our comfort zones can hold us back from embracing change.

In this blog post, we'll explore some valuable tips on how to take that next step with confidence and pave the way for a brighter future.

Feeling stuck in a rut is tough, I was there for a long time. Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis has only added another layer to the challenge. I needed to make a change in my life, but let the fear of the unknown paralyze my decision making.

For the longest time, I found myself trapped in a job that just didn't light my fire. Sure, the paycheck was nice, and the benefits were nothing to sneeze at. But deep down, I knew I was capable of so much more. Yet the fear of stepping into the unknown kept me firmly planted in my comfort zone, hesitant to take that leap of faith.

Sometimes life has a funny way of nudging us out of our comfort zones, doesn't it? For me, that nudge came from my boss informing me my position was no longer available, I got laid off.

With the corporate grind behind me, I was faced with a decision: do I dive headfirst into the job hunt, settle for a paycheck in a field that didn't ignite my passion, or do I finally take the leap and pursue my dreams?

So I did what any sane person would do - I made a list and Identified Options. I could continue the path I’m on and find a new job in a field I wasn’t passionate about, take some time and go back to school to pursue a new career path, or take a leap of faith and finally take that much needed time off to recalibrate and rediscover my passions.

This was going to be a life changing decision and I needed to consult some trusted people in my life. With my options laid out and a spark of inspiration igniting within me, I took the plunge and set a goal of creating a blog. It was time to reignite my creativity and rediscover what I'm passionate about.

I dove headfirst into the world of blogging. I spent hours researching,   devouring articles and tutorials to educate myself on how to create a blog from scratch. Breaking up my goal into steps, I began to create a strategy. First up: defining my niche. What was it that truly set my soul on fire? What unique perspective could I bring to the table? With my niche in mind, I brainstormed topics and ideas, mapping out the content that would shape my blog's identity.

And then came the moment of truth—the writing. Armed with my ideas and fueled by passion, I dove into the creative process.. It wasn't always easy, but with each post, I felt myself inching closer to finding my voice again.

On 4/1/24, I hit the "launch" button on my blog, and let me tell you it's equal parts exhilarating and terrifying. Stepping out of your comfort zone is terrifying. The unknown is downright daunting, and our minds are master storytellers, conjuring up the wildest scenarios imaginable.

But here's the thing about change—it's where the magic happens. And if you're teetering on the edge of a life-altering decision, let me share some nuggets of wisdom that helped me take that leap and start something new:

  1. Identify options.  With so many possibilities swirling around in your mind, it's time to narrow it down to your top three options. Take a moment to reflect on what truly speaks to you. Ask yourself some key questions to help clarify your desires and priorities. Remember, clarity is key to making informed decisions and moving forward with confidence.

  2. Talk with trusted resources. Consult with the people who know and support you. Their insights can be invaluable, but remember, your opinion matters most. Ultimately it's your life, so prioritize what aligns with your desires and goals. Trust your instincts and make choices that resonate with your authentic self.

  3. Establish a goal. Once you've decided the path you want to take you have to establish a clear goal. Setting concrete objectives gives you something to strive for and turn aspirations into achievable reality.

  4. Educate yourself. What do you need to learn to accomplish this goal? Read books, listen to podcasts or watch videos. Make sure you understand what you're getting into. Gather enough information to make an informed decision. You'll never know everything, so don't try but you can learn enough to get started.

  5. Break it up. Take that goal and break it up into tasks. Like I said above, once I decided I wanted to start a blog I broke it up into steps. Take a blog course, choose a niche, decide the audience…Creating tasks helps keep you on track and makes goals more achievable.

  6. Have faith. You're choosing to make a change for a reason. Keep that reason close to your heart and make it your driving force. Our minds and bodies are wired to keep us comfortable. Even if that "comfort" isn't good for you it's familiar. Keep going, you got this. Remember you can't fail, because the moment you decided to make a change, you already succeeded.

  7. Practice self-compassion. Mistakes are lessons and I'm sure you'll make plenty of them along the way. Be kind to yourself; change isn't easy, but it's a journey of growth. Embrace the learning process and forgive yourself when things don't go as planned.

  8. Celebrate milestones. Mark off those victories no matter how big or small. Every effort you make to progress on your journey deserves recognition. Whether you checked off a task on your to-do list, attended a course, or made a new connection—each step forward is worth acknowledging.

Forget the old adage, I say life is long. Too long to live unhappily, let this be your sign to jump! Start that project, make that change that's been nagging you. I'm excited for you, YOU GOT THIS!

Here are some books I've read when I was working to recover from Chronic Burnout and rediscover my passions. Hopefully they can help provide some useful perspectives for you too.
